CMF Chaikin Money Flow: Above Zero Means Inflow, Below Zero Means Outflow
The CMF Chaikin Money Flow indicator uses accumulation/distribution values to determine whether money is flowing in or out. CMF above zero signals net inflow and bullish sentiment, while CMF below zero signals net outflow and bearish sentiment. The standard parameter is a 21-day period.
What Is CMF?
CMF (Chaikin Money Flow) was developed by Marc Chaikin as a moving average version of the Accumulation/Distribution indicator. It measures whether money is flowing in or out over N days.
The core logic of CMF: The closer the closing price is to the day’s high + the larger the volume = more aggressive money inflow. Conversely, a close near the low + large volume = more aggressive money outflow.
Calculation
-
CLV (Close Location Value) = (Close - Low) - (High - Close) / (High - Low)
- CLV = +1 → Close equals the high (strongest inflow)
- CLV = -1 → Close equals the low (strongest outflow)
- CLV = 0 → Close is at the midpoint
-
MFV (Money Flow Volume) = CLV × Volume
-
CMF = Sum of MFV over N days / Sum of Volume over N days
CMF has no fixed boundaries but typically oscillates between -0.5 and +0.5.
Parameters
- 21 — Default parameter (recommended by Chaikin), suitable for daily charts
- 14 — More responsive, suitable for short-term trading
- 50 — Smoother, suitable for weekly charts and major trends
New traders should start with CMF(21).
Signal Interpretation
Direction
- CMF > 0 → Net money inflow over N days, bullish bias
- CMF < 0 → Net money outflow over N days, bearish bias
- CMF near 0 → Money flow is balanced, no clear direction
Strength
- CMF > +0.15 → Strong money inflow
- CMF < -0.15 → Strong money outflow
- CMF turns from negative to positive → Money flow reversal (outflow → inflow)
- CMF turns from positive to negative → Money flow reversal (inflow → outflow)
Divergence
- Price rises but CMF falls → Top divergence (money is withdrawing)
- Price falls but CMF rises → Bottom divergence (money is quietly flowing in)
Practical Tips
1. CMF Turning from Negative to Positive = Potential Trend Reversal
When CMF crosses above zero, money shifts from net outflow to net inflow. This is an early signal that the trend may be reversing from bearish to bullish.
On Gate.io BTC/USDT daily charts, after CMF(21) turns positive from negative, the probability of a rise over the next 5 days is approximately 60%.
2. CMF Confirms Breakout Validity
When price breaks through resistance, check CMF:
- CMF simultaneously turns positive or rises sharply from low levels → Real breakout
- CMF remains in negative territory → High risk of a false breakout
3. CMF and OBV Complement Each Other
OBV tracks long-term money flow direction, CMF tracks recent money flow intensity. Use both together:
- OBV rising + CMF > 0 → Both long-term and short-term money flowing in, strong bullish signal
- OBV rising but CMF < 0 → Long-term inflow but short-term outflow, trend weakening
Setting up CMF on Gate.io: Chart → Indicators → Search “Chaikin Money Flow” or “CMF” → Add to sub-chart → Default parameter 21.
Common Mistakes
- Buy just because CMF > 0 — CMF above zero simply describes “net money inflow”; it’s not a direct buy signal
- Ignoring CMF’s absolute magnitude — CMF = +0.01 and CMF = +0.25 are vastly different; the former is practically meaningless
- Treating CMF as redundant with MFI/OBV — CMF’s calculation logic differs from MFI and OBV; the three are complementary, not redundant
Combinations with Other Indicators
| Combination | Purpose |
|---|---|
| CMF + OBV | OBV tracks long-term trend, CMF tracks recent strength |
| CMF + MACD | MACD confirms trend, CMF confirms money flow |
| CMF + Donchian Channel | Channel breakout + CMF confirmation = genuine breakout |
CMF is a “thermometer for recent money flow” — above zero means warm (inflow), below zero means cold (outflow), near zero means lukewarm. The most practical uses are confirming trend reversals when CMF turns positive, and validating breakout signals with money flow confirmation.
