Introduction: A Breakout Without Volume Is a “Paper Tiger”
BTC breaks through the $100,000 milestone, looking spectacular. But what if the breakout bar’s volume is only half the normal level? This means there isn’t enough capital pushing price higher — the breakout will likely fail quickly. Price change is just the surface; volume is the true driving force.
The Force Index (FI) combines price change and volume, revealing how much “driving power” the market actually has. Like physics, where force = mass × acceleration, Force Index = price change × volume — a price change without volume is like acceleration without mass; it can’t push anything.

Force Index was proposed by Alexander Elder in his book Trading for a Living and is a core indicator of Elder’s Triple Screen trading system.
Calculation Formula
Raw Force Index (1-period):
FI(1) = (Current close - Previous close) × Current volume
Smoothed Force Index (N-period):
FI(N) = EMA(FI(1), N)
Value Interpretation
- FI > 0: Price rising with volume pushing, bullish force dominant
- FI < 0: Price falling with volume pushing, bearish force dominant
- Large FI absolute value: Large price change or large volume — strong driving force
- FI near 0: Small price change or small volume — weak driving force
Key Insight
Two extreme scenarios demonstrate Force Index’s value:
- Big price rally + tiny volume: FI value remains small — seemingly impressive rally but lacking force support, prone to reversal
- Small price drop + massive volume: FI absolute value is large — a minor drop backed by heavy capital flight, dangerous signal
This is why Force Index is more insightful than simply looking at price gains — it reveals the truth behind the volume.

Scenario 1: Breakout Validation — Does BTC’s Breakout Have Real Capital Support?
BTC consolidates between $98,000-$100,000 then breaks above $100,000.
Comparing two scenarios:
Valid breakout:
- Breakout day: Price rises $3,000, volume 2x the 5-day average
- FI(2) = 3,000 × 2,000,000 = 6,000,000,000 (massive positive value)
- FI(13) quickly rises from low levels into positive territory
- Conclusion: Breakout backed by heavy capital, high credibility
False breakout:
- Breakout day: Price rises $1,500, volume only 60% of normal
- FI(2) = 1,500 × 600,000 = 900,000,000 (value far below valid breakout)
- FI(13) still hovering near zero
- Conclusion: Breakout lacks capital support, likely to fall back
Action: On breakouts, check whether both FI(2) and FI(13) are positive with large values — dual confirmation of capital driving force.
Scenario 2: Bottom Buy Signal — FI Divergence During ETH’s Decline
ETH falls from $4,000 to $3,200 then begins rebounding.
Observing FI(13) changes:
- At $3,400: FI(13) deeply negative, bearish force extremely strong
- At $3,200: ETH continues minor decline but FI(13) negative value starts shrinking (from large negative to smaller negative)
- This means: Even though price is still falling, the volume of fleeing capital is decreasing — bearish force is exhausting
This is FI bottom divergence: Price still making new lows, but Force Index negative values are shrinking — bearish “ammunition” is running out.
Action: Prepare to enter long when FI(13) recovers from deep negative toward the zero line; confirm after price breaks above the previous low.
Scenario 3: Elder Triple Screen in Practice — BTC Short-Term Trading
The classic way Elder’s Triple Screen uses FI:
Screen 1 (Weekly): Determine the major trend direction
- Weekly FI(13) > 0: Major trend upward, only go long
- Weekly FI(13) < 0: Major trend downward, only go short or observe
Screen 2 (Daily): Find pullback entry points
- Weekly trend upward: Wait for daily FI(2) to dip into negative (short-term pullback)
- Enter long when FI(2) turns from negative back to positive
Screen 3 (4-hour): Precise entry timing
- After daily FI(2) recovery signal, find specific entry price on the 4-hour chart
This method is especially effective for BTC: Check weekly capital direction first, then catch short-term capital shifts on daily pullbacks using FI(2).
Common Misuses
1. Only Looking at FI Sign, Not Absolute Value
FI = +100 and FI = +10,000 are both positive, but their meanings are entirely different. The former has weak driving force; the latter is strong. Always consider FI’s absolute value magnitude, not just the positive/negative sign.
2. Using 1-Period FI Directly for Trading
FI(1) is extremely volatile — it can swing from +500M to -300M to +200M daily, too noisy. Must use EMA smoothing; at minimum FI(2) for trading decisions.
3. Not Considering Volume Data Reliability
Volume data varies significantly across crypto exchanges. Some platforms engage in wash trading, making volume data unreliable. Before using Force Index, ensure your data source is trustworthy — otherwise FI values may be severely distorted.
4. Confusing FI with OBV
OBV is a cumulative volume indicator (add on up days, subtract on down days); FI is a single-period price change × volume. OBV tracks long-term capital trends; FI measures current driving force — they complement each other but can’t substitute for one another.
Combinations with Other Indicators
Force Index + MACD: Driving Force + Trend Direction
- FI(13) > 0 + MACD golden cross: Trend upward with capital push, strong confirmation
- FI(13) < 0 + MACD death cross: Trend downward with capital flight, weak confirmation
- FI provides capital-level confirmation; MACD provides trend-level confirmation
Force Index + RSI: Driving Force + Momentum Overbought/Oversold
- FI(2) turns from negative to positive + RSI recovering from 30: Bottom bounce backed by capital
- RSI > 70 + FI(2) rapidly declining: Top momentum exhaustion + capital withdrawal, dual sell confirmation
Force Index + EMA Trend Line: Force + Direction
- Price above EMA + FI(13) > 0: Trend and force aligned, trade in the trend direction
- Price above EMA + FI(13) < 0: Trend upward but short-term force weakening, watch for pullback risk
