Ichimoku Kinko Hyo: Cloud Chart + Conversion Line + Delay Line Complete Guide
Ichimoku Kinko Hyo is a multi-dimensional trend system invented by Japanese trader Goichi Hosoda, featuring five elements — cloud chart, conversion line, base line, delay line, and 26-period shift — providing trend direction, support/resistance, and momentum at a glance.
What Is Ichimoku Kinko Hyo?
Ichimoku Kinko Hyo was developed by Japanese journalist Goichi Hosoda starting in the 1930s, refined over 30 years, and publicly published in 1969. “Ichimoku Kinko” means “one glance equilibrium” — with 5 lines + cloud chart, you can see trend direction, support/resistance, and momentum strength all at once.
It’s the only single indicator system that simultaneously provides trend direction, support/resistance, and momentum signals without needing additional indicators.
Five Elements
1. Tenkan-sen (Conversion Line)
- 9-day (Highest + Lowest) / 2
- Short-term direction indicator, similar to 9-day EMA but smoother
- Tenkan-sen pointing upward = short-term uptrend
2. Kijun-sen (Base Line)
- 26-day (Highest + Lowest) / 2
- Medium-term direction indicator, similar to 26-day EMA
- Tenkan-sen above Kijun-sen = uptrend confirmed
3. Kumo (Cloud)
- Senkou Span A = (Tenkan-sen + Kijun-sen) / 2, shifted forward 26 days
- Senkou Span B = 52-day (Highest + Lowest) / 2, shifted forward 26 days
- Span A > Span B → Red cloud (bullish); Span A < Span B → Green cloud (bearish)
- The cloud represents future support/resistance zones
4. Chikou Span (Delay Line)
- Current close shifted backward 26 days
- Chikou Span above price = confirms upward momentum
- Chikou Span below price = confirms downward momentum
5. The 26-Day Shift
- Ichimoku’s “time symmetry” design: 26 days = one month of trading days in Japan at the time
Parameters
- 9, 26, 52 — Default parameters (Hosoda’s original design), suitable for daily charts
- 7, 22, 44 — Crypto-adjusted version (faster crypto markets), suitable for 4-hour charts
- 9, 30, 60 — Large-cycle version, suitable for weekly charts
New traders can simply use the default 9, 26, 52.
Signal Interpretation
Three-Line Relationship Determines Direction
- Tenkan-sen > Kijun-sen > Cloud top → Strong uptrend
- Tenkan-sen < Kijun-sen < Cloud bottom → Strong downtrend
- Tenkan-sen and Kijun-sen inside the cloud → Ranging zone
Cloud Chart Determines Support/Resistance
- Price above cloud → Cloud acts as support
- Price below cloud → Cloud acts as resistance
- Price inside cloud → Direction unclear, wait
Delay Line Confirms Momentum
- Chikou Span above 26-days-ago price → Upward momentum confirmed
- Chikou Span below 26-days-ago price → Downward momentum confirmed
Practical Tips
1. TK Golden Cross + Price Above Cloud = Strong Buy
Tenkan-sen crossing above Kijun-sen (TK golden cross) + price above cloud = strongest buy signal.
On Gate.io BTC/USDT daily charts, when TK golden crosses occur above the cloud, the subsequent 2–4 week上涨概率 is approximately 70%.
2. Cloud Color Change = Trend Shift
Cloud turning from green to red → Downtrend可能 shifting to uptrend. Cloud turning from red to green → Uptrend可能 shifting to downtrend.
Note: Cloud color changes happen 26 days ahead (because the cloud is向前偏移 26 days), so cloud color change is an early warning signal 26 days in advance — this is Ichimoku’s most unique优势.
3. Delay Line Confirms Entry
Chikou Span above 26-days-ago price → Confirms upward momentum, can go long. Chikou Span below 26-days-ago price → Confirms downward momentum, can go short.
Setting up Ichimoku on Gate.io: Chart → Indicators → Search “Ichimoku” → Add to main chart → 5 lines + cloud appear all at once → Default parameters 9, 26, 52.
Common Mistakes
- The cloud is too complex to understand — The core is just 3 things: price above/below/inside cloud, cloud red/green, TK golden/death cross
- Ignoring the delay line — The delay line provides momentum confirmation; skipping it means seeing direction but not strength
- Using default parameters on timeframes below 4-hour — 9, 26, 52 are daily parameters; on 1-hour charts, shrink to 7, 22, 44
Combinations with Other Indicators
Ichimoku itself is a complete system and generally doesn’t need additional indicators. If you must add:
| Combination | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Ichimoku + RSI | RSI confirms overbought/oversold, Ichimoku sets direction |
| Ichimoku + Volume | Volume confirms cloud breakout |
Ichimoku Kinko Hyo is the only indicator system where “one glance tells you everything” — direction, support/resistance, momentum, and future predictions, all covered by 5 lines. New traders might find the cloud too complex, but只要记住 3 core principles: price above cloud = bullish, below cloud = bearish, inside cloud = wait, and you can use Ichimoku effectively.
