SMC Smart Money Concepts: Institutional Order Block + Liquidity Sweep

SMC (Smart Money Concepts) isn’t a set of indicators—it’s a language system for reading the market. Its core assumption is simple: markets aren’t driven by retail traders, markets are driven by institutions (smart money). Retail provides liquidity; smart money exploits liquidity.

All SMC tools revolve around one question: Where is smart money entering? Where is smart money exiting? How does smart money use retail stop losses to obtain liquidity?

When you can answer these three questions, you can trade alongside smart money—not become smart money’s prey.

Core Principles

Point 1: Smart Money Behavioral Characteristics

Smart money (institutions, hedge funds, large capital) has three observable behavioral特征:

  1. Price push力度: Smart money orders are too large to hide their impact on price—when smart money buys, price rises fast; when smart money sells, price falls fast. These fast moves留下 traces.
  2. Concentrated order execution: Smart money doesn’t分散 orders across multiple price levels—they集中执行 in specific price ranges (Order Blocks), because集中 execution costs less and is more efficient.
  3. Exploiting retail stop losses: Smart money knows retail stop losses集中 where—below key supports / above key resistances. Smart money故意 pushes price to触及 these stop loss areas, triggering retail stop loss orders (becoming market orders), using this额外 liquidity to完成 their own accumulation or distribution.

Point 2: Order Block—Smart Money Entry Price Range

Order Block is the last opposite-direction candle before price快速移动. Bullish Order Block: the last bearish candle before price快速上涨—smart money完成大量 buying within that bearish candle’s price range. Bearish Order Block: the last bullish candle before price快速下跌—smart money完成大量 selling within that bullish candle’s price range.

Why the last opposite candle? Because smart money’s集中执行, before pushing price away, must先吸收 all opposing orders in that area. The last bearish candle represents sellers’最后 resistance—smart money完成 buying during this resistance. Once seller power耗尽 (bearish candle ends), smart money’s buying power begins pushing price快速上涨.

Order Block有效 entry positions:

  • Bullish OB: Near OB’s lower boundary (closer to OB最低价 entry means smaller stop loss distance)
  • Bearish OB: Near OB’s upper boundary

Order Block失效判断: Price穿过 OB and持续 advances. If price returns to bullish OB but穿过 OB继续下跌, OB内 buy orders已消耗, OB失效.

Point 3: Liquidity Sweep—Smart Money Stop Loss Hunting

Retail stop loss orders集中 in two positions:

  • Buy-side Liquidity: Above key resistance levels—long traders’ profit-taking orders and short traders’ stop loss orders
  • Sell-side Liquidity: Below key support levels—short traders’ profit-taking orders and long traders’ stop loss orders

Smart money needs this liquidity to完成 large orders. When smart money wants to大量买入, they先 push price down to触及 sell-side liquidity areas (triggering long traders’ stop loss orders), these stop loss orders become market sell orders—smart money eats these sell orders at更低 prices,完成 accumulation. This is Liquidity Sweep.

同理, when smart money wants to大量卖出, they先 push price up to触及 buy-side liquidity areas (triggering short traders’ stop loss orders), these stop loss orders become market buy orders—smart money sells to these buy orders at更高 prices,完成 distribution.

Liquidity Sweep特征: Price briefly突破 key support/resistance (triggering stop losses), then quickly反转 direction—because smart money has already利用了 liquidity, now they要 push price toward the真实 direction.

Point 4: FVG (Fair Value Gap)—Speed Traces of Price Movement

FVG is a price真空区 between three consecutive candles—where the second candle’s shadows don’t cover the space between the first candle’s shadows and the third candle’s shadows.

Bullish FVG: First candle’s high < third candle’s low—there’s a price range between first and third candles where no trading occurred. This means price jumped from first candle to third candle, with no buying/selling activity in between—buyers were too急切, unwilling to wait for price to slowly rise.

Bearish FVG: First candle’s low > third candle’s high—there’s a no-trading price range in between, sellers too急切.

FVG significance: Price真空区 are traces of smart money’s急切 order execution. When price later returns to FVG area, it倾向于 pause or反弹 there—because FVG区域 has no historical trading data, price needs to “补完” information there.

Point 5: SMC Complete Analysis Framework

SMC analysis is a multi-layer framework:

  1. Market Structure: HH/HL/LH/LL确定 trend direction
  2. Liquidity:识别 buy-side and sell-side liquidity pool locations
  3. Order Block: Mark smart money entry ranges at key levels
  4. FVG: Mark speed traces of price movement
  5. Liquidity Sweep: Wait for smart money to sweep liquidity后 then enter

Trading logic: First check structure (确定 direction) → Find liquidity pools (确定 target areas) → Mark OB and FVG (确定 entry ranges) → Wait for Liquidity Sweep (确定 entry timing) → Enter at OB/FVG, stop loss outside Liquidity Sweep extremes.

Crypto Applications

BTC SMC Example: Long Signal.

BTC near $60,000 (假设 scenario):

  • Structure: Daily uptrend (HH + HL sequence完整)
  • Liquidity: Sell-side liquidity below $58,000 (near previous HL lows)—long traders’ stop losses集中 here
  • OB: $58,800–$59,200 is bullish OB (last bearish candle range before price快速上涨)
  • FVG: $59,500–$60,200 is bullish FVG (price jumped over this range)

Actual move: BTC先 drops to $57,800触及 sell-side liquidity (triggering long traders’ stop losses), then快速反弹s to $59,000 entering OB range → Enter long. Stop loss at $57,500 (below Liquidity Sweep extreme), target $65,000 (next buy-side liquidity area).

ETH SMC Example: Short Signal.

ETH near $3,500 (假设 scenario):

  • Structure: Daily downtrend (LH + LL sequence)
  • Liquidity: Buy-side liquidity above $3,600 (near previous LH highs)
  • OB: $3,520–$3,560 is bearish OB (last bullish candle range before price快速下跌)
  • FVG: $3,420–$3,480 is bearish FVG

Actual move: ETH先 rises to $3,650触及 buy-side liquidity (triggering short traders’ stop losses), then快速回落s to $3,540 entering OB range → Enter short. Stop loss at $3,680 (above Liquidity Sweep extreme), target $3,000 (next sell-side liquidity area).

Practical Scenarios

Scenario 1: SMC Analysis Daily Routine

Spend 20 minutes daily doing SMC scan:

  1. Open BTC weekly chart, mark current structure direction (HH+HL or LH+LL)
  2. Mark最近的 buy-side liquidity pools (above key highs) and sell-side liquidity pools (below key lows)
  3. Mark OB at最近的 BOS locations (last opposite candle before BOS)
  4. Mark FVG at最近快速移动 areas
  5. Judge which liquidity pool smart money might next sweep → make entry plan

This routine simplifies分析 to five steps, each with明确 operational content.

Scenario 2: Entry Confirmation After Liquidity Sweep

Don’t enter immediately after Liquidity Sweep—you need to确认 smart money has完成 sweeping. Confirmation signals:

  • Price快速反转 direction after sweep (returns to OB/FVG area)
  • Reversal candle closes strongly (long: close in upper portion; short: close in lower portion)
  • Reversal accompanied by reasonable volume increase (smart money’s push power is真实)

Enter only when all three conditions同时满足. If price slowly反转s after sweep (not快速反转), it might be假 sweep—smart money has no真实 intent, just market noise触及了 liquidity areas.

Scenario 3: OB Entry Risk Management

OB entry’s关键 is stop loss placement:

  • Bullish OB stop loss: Below OB最低价 0.5%–1% (or below Liquidity Sweep extreme)
  • Bearish OB stop loss: Above OB最高价 0.5%–1% (or above Liquidity Sweep extreme)

Stop loss placement选择 depends on OB strength信心—strong OB (fast departure, large幅度) can use tighter stops; weak OB needs wider stops to give price更多 space.

Common Misapplications

Misapplication 1: Treating every bearish/bullish candle as Order Block. Not all opposite candles are OBs—only those followed by快速 price movement’s last opposite candle才是 OB. If a bearish candle后面 price only slowly rises, that bearish candle isn’t an OB, just普通 pullback.

Misapplication 2: Only looking at OB without liquidity. OB tells you where smart money enters, but Liquidity Sweep tells you when smart money enters. OB entry without Liquidity Sweep is过早 entry—smart money可能 hasn’t完成 sweeping, price可能 continues反向 moving to触及更多 liquidity.

Misapplication 3: Entering at every FVG. FVG is a price movement trace, not an entry signal. Price returning to FVG不一定 means反弹—sometimes price穿过 FVG继续前进. FVG should be结合 with OB—enter when price returns to OB area’s FVG, more可靠 than just returning to FVG.
