VSA Volume Spread Analysis: Wyckoff Volume Interpretation Methodology

VSA volume spread analysis compares volume against candlestick body, shadows, and price spread to识别 supply-demand power真实 intent. Volume is price counterfeit detector—telling you whether price behavior is真实 or fake.

VSA Volume Spread Analysis: Wyckoff’s Volume Interpretation Methodology

Richard Wyckoff in the 1930s proposed a market observation method; one core idea: Volume validates price. Price tells you what the market is doing; volume tells you how much effort the market puts into doing it.

Tom Williams developed VSA (Volume Spread Analysis) on Wyckoff’s foundation, turning this idea into a具体 operational system—by comparing volume, candlestick price spread (Spread), and close position (Close Position),识别 supply-demand power balance and smart money’s真实 intent.

Core Principles

Point 1: Volume Is Effort, Price Spread Is Result

VSA’s basic metaphor is physics: Volume is “Effort,” price movement distance (candlestick spread, i.e. high − low) is “Result.”

  • High volume + Large spread = Effort and result match—推动力量真实
  • High volume + Small spread = Large effort but small result—someone is阻止 price movement (大量 opposing orders absorbing推动力)
  • Low volume + Large spread = Small effort but large result—market lacks resistance, a轻 push moves price far
  • Low volume + Small spread = Small effort, small result—market is resting, no clear directional power

The second scenario (high volume, small spread) is VSA’s most重要 signal—it tells you someone is暗中对抗 trend-direction power. These “暗中对抗” orders are often smart money’s accumulation behavior.

Point 2: Close Position Reveals Who Won the Battle

A candlestick’s close position isn’t just “bullish or bearish”—its relative position within the candlestick range tells you which side won this battle:

  • Close near candlestick top (long bullish body) = Buyers推进 from open to close, sellers几乎没有 counterattack
  • Close near candlestick bottom (long bearish body) = Sellers推进 from open to close, buyers几乎没有 counterattack
  • Close near candlestick middle (short body or doji) = Buyers and sellers打成了 draw, neither won

Close position + volume combination才是 VSA’s complete information. High volume + close at top = Buyers not only努力了 (large buying) but also赢了 (close at top). High volume + close at middle = Buyers努力了, but sellers吸收了 all buying power—a draw.

Point 3: VSA Core Signals

VSA defines several关键 signals, each a特定 combination of volume and price behavior:

  • No Demand: Low volume + small spread bullish candle. Buyers have no真实意愿—upward movement lacks power support,后续可能下跌.
  • No Supply: Low volume + small spread bearish candle. Sellers have no真实意愿—downward movement lacks power support,后续可能上涨.
  • Stopping Volume: High volume + small spread + close near middle. This is最关键 signal—large trading occurred but price几乎没有 moved. Someone is大量买入对抗下跌 force, or大量卖出对抗上涨 force. Stopping volume通常 appears at trend末期—smart money is “stopping” the current trend.
  • Effort vs Result Mismatch: High volume but spread不如预期—推动力量被暗中吸收. This is smart money accumulation or distribution evidence.

Point 4: Smart Money’s Traces Are in Volume-Price Mismatches

VSA assumes smart money (institutions, large capital) behavioral特征: they don’t want price to move太快—because快速 movement increases their accumulation/distribution costs. So smart money will大量买入/卖出 while尽量让 price look “nothing重大 happening”—high volume but small spread.

Retail behavioral特征相反: their buying/selling推动s price快速移动—low volume but large spread (because no opposing orders to吸收), or when retail集体追涨出现 high volume + large spread + close at extreme position (emotion-driven, not理性 accumulation).

VSA’s core value is distinguishing these two behaviors: smart money’s volume-price mismatch (high volume, small spread) vs retail’s volume-price match (volume rises with price / volume rises with price decline).

Point 5: Volume-Price Relationship Features in Different Trend Phases

  • Trend初期: Volume逐步增加, spread逐步扩大—smart money has been accumulating, price开始反映供需 imbalance
  • Trend中期: Volume维持高位, spread稳定—trend得到广泛参与者认同
  • Trend末期: Volume暴增 but spread缩小 (Stopping Volume), or volume萎缩 but spread仍 large—smart money distributing/accumulating对抗方, trend即将反转

Crypto Applications

BTC VSA Example.

Take BTC near $64,000 top (April 2021):

  • BTC连续几天 rose from $60,000 to $64,000 (HH + HL, uptrend)
  • Near $64,000 appeared a candlestick: volume明显高于前几天, but spread很小 (only rose $500), closed near candlestick upper-middle
  • VSA解读: High volume, small spread = Stopping Volume. Someone大量买入对抗 seller power, but price只 rose $500—buyers’ “effort” didn’t转化为预期 “result.” This is smart money distributing signal (sellers暗中吸收了 buyer power).

BTC subsequently fell from $64,000 to $30,000. Stopping Volume signal提前 revealed smart money’s distribution behavior at the top.

ETH Bottom VSA Example.

ETH near $1,200 (June 2022):

  • ETH连续下跌 to $1,200 (LH + LL, downtrend)
  • Near $1,200 appeared a candlestick: volume远高于 recent levels, but spread很小 (only dropped $30), closed near candlestick middle
  • VSA解读: Stopping Volume. Someone大量买入对抗 seller power, price几乎没有下跌—buyers’ “effort” (volume) didn’t转化为 sellers’ “result” (price继续下跌). This is smart money accumulation signal.

ETH subsequently rebounded from $1,200 to $2,000.

Crypto-Specific VSA Considerations.

Crypto volume data比 traditional markets更复杂—because 24-hour trading, multiple exchanges并行, spot and futures volume分开. When using VSA,建议 using single-exchange data (e.g., Binance BTC spot volume) for consistency. Cross-exchange汇总 volume may have偏差 from不同 data sources.

Also, crypto volume容易被 “wash trading” (self-buying-self-selling)污染—某些 exchanges’ volume data contains大量虚假 trades. Using可信 exchange data is VSA analysis前提.

Practical Scenarios

Scenario 1: Finding Stopping Volume at Trend末期

When you识别 a trend可能 approaching末期 (price at关键 supply-demand zone, LH or HL structure weakness signals appeared), start关注 volume异常 changes:

  • If at关键 supply zone appeared high volume small spread bullish candle → Stopping Volume,可能是 smart money distributing → consider shorting or reducing position
  • If at关键 demand zone appeared high volume small spread bearish candle → Stopping Volume,可能是 smart money accumulating → consider going long or adding position

Stopping Volume isn’t entry signal—it’s an警报 signal提醒 you trend可能即将反转. Entry timing需要等待后续确认 signals (like Pin Bar, BOS, etc.).

Scenario 2: Using No Demand/No Supply to Confirm Pullback Strength

In uptrend pullbacks:

  • Pullback candlestick volume萎缩 + small spread bearish candle = No Supply → Sellers have no真实意愿 → pullback可能 soon end → prepare long entry
  • Pullback candlestick volume增加 + large spread bearish candle = Supply-demand matched下跌 → pullback可能 deeper → wait for更深 pullback

In downtrend rebounds:

  • Rebound candlestick volume萎缩 + small spread bullish candle = No Demand → Buyers have no真实意愿 → rebound可能 soon end → prepare short entry
  • Rebound candlestick volume增加 + large spread bullish candle = Supply-demand matched上涨 → rebound可能 deeper → wait for更深 rebound

Scenario 3: Combining Market Structure with VSA

VSA doesn’t单独使用—it’s combined with market structure:

  1. First判断 structure direction (uptrend or downtrend)
  2. At structure关键 points (HL, LH, supply-demand zones) observe VSA signals
  3. VSA signals at structure关键 points意义远大于 at random positions

Structure is骨架; VSA is flesh. Skeleton tells you trend direction; flesh tells you supply-demand power真实 intent.

Common Misapplications

Misapplication 1: Only看 volume不看 spread. “Volume increased, so trend is stronger”—this is最常见 VSA misreading. High volume可能 mean stronger trend, but also可能 mean someone is暗中对抗 trend (Stopping Volume). Without看 spread and close position, you can’t区分 these two situations.

Misapplication 2: Using VSA in low-liquidity environments. VSA前提 is volume can真实 reflect market participants’ behavior. In极低 liquidity environments (like small-cap coins, early morning hours),少量 trades can produce异常 volume data, VSA signals become不可靠.

Misapplication 3: Treating VSA as独立 strategy. VSA is a volume-price analysis tool, not独立 trading strategy. It tells you supply-demand power对比, but doesn’t tell you trend direction or entry timing. Must combine with market structure, key levels, candlestick patterns.

Summary

VSA volume spread analysis core formula: Volume is effort, spread is result, close position is胜负. When effort and result don’t match (high volume small spread), someone is暗中对抗 trend—this is often smart money’s trace.

VSA’s three core signals: Stopping Volume (trend末期 volume-price mismatch), No Demand (buyers lack真实意愿), No Supply (sellers lack真实意愿). These signals are最有意义 when appearing at关键 levels; at random positions多半是 noise.

Volume is price’s counterfeit detector—it tells you whether price behavior is真实 (volume-price match) or fake (volume-price mismatch). Learn to验证 price with volume, and you learn to distinguish smart money vs retail behavior.
