You Profit From Others’ Mistakes
Cultural Note: The original Chinese title is (Nǐ zhuàn de shì biérén fàncuò de qián). Contract trading is zero-sum — your profit is someone else’s loss.
Contract trading isn’t a place that creates value. You go long, someone goes short. You earn = they lose. Zero-sum game, minus fees, even negative-sum.
You earn money from others’ mistakes.
“You profit from others’ mistakes.”
This sounds cruel. But understanding it is the watershed of trading cognition.
Your Three Layers of Opponents
Layer 1: Retail traders — like you. Information incomplete, discipline lax, emotions unstable. Their decisions: feelings, gossip, FOMO, revenge. If you can stop making retail mistakes, you’ve already beaten most people.
Layer 2: Institutions — quant funds, market makers, hedge funds. Faster info, more data, stronger computing, bigger capital. You can only beat them on patience. They have performance pressure. You can wait a year for one perfect signal.
“Patience is retail traders’ only structural advantage over institutions.”
Layer 3: Algorithms — stop-loss hunters, liquidation engines, arbitrage bots. They love retail stop-loss orders. Your stop at the obvious position gets swept deliberately.
You Don’t Need to Be Smarter Than the Market
Trading isn’t “predict the market.” It’s “make fewer mistakes than your opponents.”
“Trading is the game of making fewer mistakes than your opponents.”
Five steps, none requiring prediction:
- Wait for signal
- Enter by rules
- Set stop-loss
- Wait for result
- Record and analyze regardless of outcome
“Do everything you should. Don’t do anything you shouldn’t.”
Texture Check:
- Your top 3 most common trading mistakes — can you list them?
- Have you reversed position immediately after a stop-loss hit? Is that a mistake?
- If your opponent could only make one mistake, which would you prefer?
