The Market Has Breath — Follow It

Cultural Note: The original Chinese title is 市场有呼吸,你要跟上 (Shìchǎng yǒu hūxī, nǐ yào gēn shàng). Markets breathe — inhale, exhale, hold — and your job is to match the rhythm.

The market isn’t a machine. It doesn’t move at constant speed. It has fast and slow, rise and fall, climax and trough — like breathing.

Most traders lose not because direction was wrong, but because rhythm was wrong.

Four Market States

1. Trend: Price moves continuously in one direction, small brief pullbacks. → Follow, let profits run.

2. Oscillation: Price swings within a range, no clear direction. → Trade the range, quick in and out.

3. No market: Price barely moves, volatility extremely low. → Don’t trade. Wait. No-market entries = finding signals in noise = random trading = paying fees.

4. Extreme: Black swan, flash crash, sudden spike. → Reduce position or hedge. Stop-losses may not execute at set prices (slippage). Exchanges may go down. Emotional volatility extreme.

你在什么行情做什么事。 “Do what’s appropriate for the market state you’re in.”

Most people do the opposite of what’s correct:

  • Trend → frequent exits, small profits (should hold)
  • Oscillation → chase and panic (should trade range)
  • No market → force trades (should wait)
  • Extreme → go all-in (should reduce)

Why? Because correct responses are anti-human-nature. That’s why rules > intuition.

Identifying Market State

Three simple checks:

  1. Moving averages: Aligned → trend. Crossing → oscillation. Overlapping → no market.
  2. Bollinger bands: Expanding → trend or extreme. Narrow at middle → oscillation. Extremely tight → no market.
  3. Volume: Volume + direction = trend. Shrinking + range = oscillation. Extreme shrinkage = no market. Burst + violent move = extreme.

The Ultimate Rhythm Sense

最高级的交易节奏感,不是”判断市场在什么状态”,是感受市场在什么状态。 “The highest level of rhythm sense isn’t ‘judging what state the market is in’ — it’s feeling what state it’s in.”

This isn’t mysticism. After thousands of hours watching charts and hundreds of real trades, you’ll glance at a chart and instantly feel: this is trend-breath, oscillation-breath, sleeping-breath, panic-breath.

No shortcut. Start with the three simple methods. After 10,000 hours, they’ll become instinct.

Texture Check:

  1. Label your last 10 trades’ market states. Which state produced most losses?
  2. What market state does your core strategy suit?
  3. Can you endure 3 days without trading during “no market” periods?
