Simplicity to the Extreme
Cultural Note: The original Chinese title is 简洁到极致 (Jiǎnjié dào jízhì). You’ve heard “the great way is simple” — but simplicity is not the starting point, it’s the destination. You must pass through complexity first.
You may have heard “大道至简” (the great way is simple). But few tell you: simplicity is not the starting point — it’s the destination.
You must first experience complexity before you can return to simplicity.
Four Stages of Simplicity
Stage 1: Don’t know you don’t know. Newbie simplicity = ignorance. “K-lines just go up and down, I can see it.”
Stage 2: Know you don’t know. Learned some indicators, discovered complexity. Start adding indicators, rules, conditions. This complexity = seeking knowledge.
Stage 3: Know what you know. After using many indicators, you discover most are useless. You start deleting. Down to 2-3. This simplicity = rational choice.
Stage 4: Simplicity to the extreme. You don’t even need 2-3 indicators. Price near support → maybe long. Price near resistance → maybe short. Price in the middle → don’t trade. Your eyes are the best indicator.
这个阶段的简洁是直觉。 “This stage’s simplicity is intuition.”
The One-Page Test
Can you write your trading system on one page?
Many can’t. Their system needs 10-page PPTs, 3 Excel sheets, 5 indicator documents.
Top traders’ systems fit on one page:
Entry: Price near key S/R, RSI confirmation (optional), R:R ≥ 2:1
Exit: Stop at S/R outer side, target at next key level
Position: Loss per trade ≤ 2%
Discipline: 24h break after big L/W, max 2 trades/day, no trade without signal
如果你不能用一页纸写清楚你的系统,你的系统就太复杂了。 “If you can’t write your system clearly on one page, it’s too complex.”
Three Standards for Simplicity
- 10-second decision? Price reaches entry condition — can you decide in 10 seconds?
- Explain without charts? Can a non-trader friend understand in 5 minutes?
- Newbie learns in 1 week? Could someone else execute your system within a week?
真正的简洁 = 知道什么可以删,并且已经删了。 “True simplicity = knowing what to delete, and having deleted it.” 伪简洁 = 不知道有什么可以加,所以看起来简洁。 “Fake simplicity = not knowing what to add, so it looks simple.”
Texture Check:
- Can you write your system on one page?
- Does it satisfy all three standards?
- Is your simplicity “true” or “fake”?
