The Five Disadvantages of Retail Traders

Cultural Note: The original Chinese title is 散户的五重劣势 (Sǎnhù de wǔ chóng lièshì). This is the opening chapter of the 173,000-word systematic dissection of retail trader structural disadvantage.

Core conclusion: From the day retail traders enter the crypto market, they are in structural disadvantage. Information, time, psychology, tools, cognition — none of these gaps can be弥补 (made up) by effort alone. Admitting this is the premise for all subsequent discussion in this book.

A Brutal Mathematical Reality

In a complete bull-bear cycle (approximately 4 years), profitable retail accounts are less than 5%. Among those 5%, the ones achieving financial freedom (10x+ returns) are less than 0.1%.

Out of 1,000 retail traders entering crypto, fewer than 50 leave with profit. Only 1 achieves what’s called class transition. The other 950+ either leave with losses, remain trapped, or have been zeroed out.

This isn’t luck. This is structural.

散户从踏入加密市场的第一天起,就处于结构性劣势。 “From day one, retail traders are in structural disadvantage.”

What Is Structural Disadvantage?

Structural disadvantage means: even if you achieve personal excellence, the structural disadvantage remains.

You can work hard and advance in a company — effort correlates with reward. But you cannot, through training alone, make a 1.7m person competitive in the NBA. The NBA player’s body is a structural advantage. The retail trader’s position is a structural disadvantage. Both are pre-existing conditions, not fixable through willpower.

结构性劣势意味着:即使你做到个人层面的极致,仍然无法改变整体格局。 “Structural disadvantage means: even personal excellence cannot change the overall landscape.”

The Five Dimensions

1. Information — Your opponent sees what you cannot. Depth charts, on-chain data, exchange internals, insider info — at every information chain link, retail traders are at the very end.

2. Psychology — FOMO, fear, obsession are not character flaws — they are evolutionary programs hard-coded in dopamine and amygdala systems. Dealers don’t need to understand you personally; they just need to understand the program.

3. Time — Retail traders are always late. News reaches you hours after dealers already positioned. By the time you see “某coin即将上币安,” the dealer’s shipment is already complete.

4. Tools — Soldiers without weapons. Retail traders use free charting software and basic indicators. Dealers use proprietary algorithms, real-time order flow, and internal exchange data.

5. Cognition — Most retail traders enter with maps drawn by other retail traders — influencers, Telegram groups, YouTube tutorials. These maps are not just incomplete — they are systematically distorted to serve those who drew them.

This chapter is the foundation of the entire Weakness of Retail Traders book. The full Chinese text continues with detailed analysis of each disadvantage.
