Psychological Disadvantage — FOMO, Fear, Obsession
Cultural Note: The original Chinese title is 心理劣势 (Xīnlǐ lièshì). You are not fighting the market — you are fighting yourself. FOMO, fear, and obsession are evolutionary programs, not character flaws.
You are not fighting the market — you are fighting yourself.
FOMO makes you buy at the top. Fear makes you sell at the bottom. Obsession makes you double down on losses.
These are not character flaws — they are evolutionary programs, hard-coded in your brain’s dopamine and amygdala systems. Dealers don’t need to understand you personally; they just need to understand the program, and it’s the same for every retail trader.
FOMO不是情绪,是神经反应。庄家不需要了解你,只需要了解这些反应程序,就能精准收割你。 “FOMO is not an emotion — it’s a neural reaction. Dealers don’t need to understand you; they just need to understand these reaction programs to harvest you precisely.”
The Three Psychological Traps
FOMO (Fear of Missing Out): Neural response triggered by seeing others profit. Your dopamine system fires, creating urgency. This isn’t a choice — it’s a biological reaction that takes conscious override to resist.
Fear: When positions go against you, the amygdala activates fight-or-flight. In trading, “flight” means panic selling at the worst possible time — precisely at support levels where recovery is most likely.
Obsession (执念): The refusal to accept loss. “I was right, the market is wrong.” This isn’t stubbornness — it’s ego defense. Your identity is tied to your judgment, so admitting the judgment was wrong feels like admitting you are wrong.
Why This Is Structural
即使你做到个人层面的极致,仍然无法改变整体格局。 “Even personal excellence cannot change the overall landscape.”
You can train yourself to resist FOMO most of the time. But at your weakest moments (after consecutive losses, during major rallies, when everyone is posting profits), the neural response overwhelms rational override. Dealers design market movements to exploit precisely these moments.
This chapter contains detailed psychological analysis with approximately 40,000 characters of Chinese text.
